Painting Kids Bedrooms

I have included the Mythic Pain Samples above, as I feel that going green in a child's bedroom is an important consideration in protecting their health. Regular paint does release toxic emissions into the air, which can lead to negative health effects. VOC paint is a much safer alternative.

In choosing the color of paint for your child's room, it's a good idea to involve them in the process. Using a color wheel can make the decision much easier. Younger kids are generally drawn to bright colors such as red or orange. Cool blue and green tones can have a soothing or calming effect. Neutral colors provide a great back drop for bright and colorful art prints. Creative paint techniques can also be incorporated, such as sponging, rag rolling, and color washing to allow for an interesting texture. If your child has a theme room in mind, this can also point you in the direction of the colors that will be chosen for the paint.

A useful tip, and one that I highly recommend, is to purchase the bedding prior to painting the room. It works best to bring the quilt or comforter, shams, etc. into the paint store with you to ensure you get the perfect "match" on color or tone. For instance, if there is bright pink in the bedding set, you may want to tone the paint color down a few shades for the walls. I always bring the paint samples home prior to purchasing the paint, just to see how the actual lighting in the room effects the color. I take about 10 paint samples and tape them to the wall, leaving them there for a day or so, as to avoid making a decision too quickly. Day and evening light can have an impact on your color choice.

It's important to avoid a room that looks 'overdone' with the colors used in bedding, artwork and area rugs. If you have your heart set on a particular color of paint, and can't find bedding that matches - a solution is to simply finding bedding within the same color range, or solid color bedding with contrasting cushions.

There are many different ways to treat the walls for kids. Try using one wall, and painting a large mural. There is also a wide array of wall murals and borders that can be purchased to coordinate with almost anything you have in mind. You can use craft paint to paint little dump trucks, ballerinas, dinosaurs, or fairies on the wall, or apply peel and stick wall decals.
